Car Thieves Deterred By Patrolling Drones

Founded by former law enforcement officer Ryan Smith, Titan Protection and Consulting is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas. Established nearly 15 years ago, the company was built to elevate industry standards by combining rigorously trained security professionals, many of them off-duty officers, with advanced monitoring technologies. Titan’s core objective is to safeguard clients’ peace of mind by uniting skilled personnel and innovative tools to deliver security solutions defined by speed, quality, and responsiveness.
In 2014, as the broader drone revolution was beginning to take shape, Titan recognized the potential of unmanned systems to transform the security industry. While the company had already established itself through traditional services such as on-site guards, mobile patrols, and remote monitoring, it became an early adopter of drones as a force multiplier for its teams. By integrating aerial surveillance at a time when most security providers relied solely on ground resources, Titan positioned itself as a leader in a technological shift that redefined how large properties and vulnerable assets could be protected.
Building on its early adoption of drone technology, Titan began collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure it remained at the forefront of safe and effective drone deployment. The company engaged in pilot programs, operated within visual line of sight rules, and consistently demonstrated disciplined safety practices. By training certified remote pilots, documenting procedures, and proving reliability through controlled deployments, Titan established a strong record of compliance. This ongoing cooperation with regulators created the foundation of trust that ultimately led to the FAA granting the company a groundbreaking nationwide waiver.
FAA Grants Titan The First Commercial Security Company (BVLOS) Waiver
This relationship with the FAA proved pivotal for Titan in addressing what is widely considered the next frontier in drone operations, Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS). BVLOS operations have historically been permitted only on rare occasions and under strict, costly waivers, while most drones must be operated within Visual Line Of Sight (VLOS) of a pilot at all times. Recently, Titan became the first commercial security company in the United States to be granted a comprehensive BVLOS waiver. Formally designated as Certificate of Waiver Number 107W-2025-01299, this authorization allows Titan to operate surveillance drones nationwide without obtaining individual, location-specific FAA approvals.
Making BVLOS operations possible is a combination of DJI’s Matrice 4T drones, the Dock 3 autonomous docking station, and Titan’s Automated Response and Patrol (ARP) technology. The Matrice 4T are “intelligent multi-sensor compact drones,” according to DJI, that feature “advanced capabilities such as smart detection and laser marking measurement. With an AI computing platform and significantly enhanced sensing capabilities, flight operations with these drones will be even safer and more reliable than ever before.”
The Dock 3 station facilitates autonomous deployment, landing, and recharging, allowing the drones to operate continuously without manual intervention. Titan’s ARP technology integrates these drones with AI-driven analytics and real-time monitoring systems, enabling proactive threat detection and rapid response. The combination of advanced drone technology and ARP provides a scalable and highly efficient solution for modern security challenges.
Titan was able to demonstrate the effectiveness of this integrated drone and ARP system in a real-world setting at Cable Dahmer Chevrolet in Kansas City. Rick Van Zon, CFO of the dealership, explained that two individuals trespassed onto the lot and broke the window of one of the vehicles with the intent to steal it. The commotion alerted one of the drones that was patrolling elsewhere on the lot and immediately diverted its course to investigate.
As soon as the drone arrived on the scene, the would-be thieves ran off. “This was the first time we’ve ever seen criminals actually run away because they knew they were caught,” Mr. Van Zon said. “Previously, we used to watch footage the next morning of criminals who had free rein of our property for over an hour. It was demoralizing for our team and devastating for our bottom line.”

By deploying the drones across the dealership’s expansive lot, Titan proved that the combination of autonomous patrols, real-time monitoring, and rapid threat response could prevent theft and protect high-value assets under operational conditions. This deployment served as a clear validation of the technology’s capabilities and its potential to transform commercial security operations. “This incident is a perfect example of why our remote-piloted drones are a game changer for businesses,” said Mr. Smith, “especially those with valuable assets in hard-to-patrol areas.” With this successful BVLOS deployment, Titan has not only proven the effectiveness of its drone and ARP system but also set a new standard for the future of commercial security operations.
