A Woman in China Hired a Drone Company to Put on a Drone Show to Celebrate Her Dog’s 10th Birthday
There is a reason why dogs are called “man’s best friend”. With evidence suggesting that dogs were first tamed 15,000 years ago, they were the first animals to be domesticated as pets. Today, more than 40% of pet owners worldwide are dog owners. These furry, four legged companions are loyal, loving, and intelligent creatures that better the lives of their owners. During the height of lockdowns imposed by the global pandemic, dog adoption rates skyrocketed. More than ever, people need the love and connection found through a dog while they were stuck in isolation.
Most dog owners will admit that their pets are a part of the family and that they would do just about anything to keep their dogs happy and healthy. A woman from China’s south central city of Changsha went above and beyond to make her beloved dog happy a few weeks ago. The unidentified woman used another of the pandemic’s biggest trends, drone shows, to celebrate her dog’s 10th birthday. The woman gathered some loved ones along the banks of the Xiangjiang River, where they sang happy birthday to the dog, Doudou. Doudou wore a fashionable beaded collar and a Santa hat as she sat next to a dog toy Christmas tree and a cake, with an array of drones waiting on the ground behind her.
When the humans, who also wore Santa hats, were finished singing to Doudou, the drones lifted to the sky to animate birthday themed images and messages like “Happy 10th Birthday to Doudou” in Mandarin. The owner specifically requested 520 drones to be used in the display as the Mandarin pronunciation of this number sounds like the English phrase “I love you”. It is estimated that Doudou’s owner spent 100,000 yuan, nearly $14,000 on the drone show. While Doudou appeared to be less than impressed with the drone show birthday celebration, authorities were even more upset by it.
Drone shows have become hugely popular, especially as a way to entertain and show community strength and appreciation during the pandemic. What nearly all licensed drone show companies know is that there are strict rules that need to be followed in a performance. The drone pilots need to be licensed and use registered equipment. All flights need to abide by regulations and be approved in advance. The police in China have made it known that unauthorized drones will be forced to land. Doudou’s drone show was never approved. But since the police didn’t notice it in time, there have been no charges made.
There is no denying that the bond you build with a dog is strong and deep. Dogs give us so much love, asking for little in return. As dog owners, it is understandable to want to celebrate your dog, sharing the love. For some, that might mean a trip to the dog park, a new toy, special treats, or even a dog friendly birthday cake. If you want to celebrate your dog with a drone show, that too is possible. Just be sure to go through the proper channels so it is done safely and legally.
