The New York Mets are working hard to secure the airspace around Citi Field stadium. They hired a company called Dedrone whose job is to protect the airspace from malicious drones.  Citi Field is only a mile away from LaGuardia airport in New York, and like many other stadiums, has a no-fly zone policy. Pablo Estrada, the VP of marketing explained in a webinar last month. He stated that the challenge faced by the Mets is the security of its airspace.

The issue is not only restricted to baseball games, but to all other high profile events like music concerts. The solution provided by Dedrone uses RF sensors and video cameras to detect and report drone airspace violations.  If there is a drone intrusion, the incident is recorded and sent to the local police department. Dedrone has been providing this solution for a while now and has been successful in securing Cit Field airspace.

The way it works is that the Dedrone system connects to sensors and video cameras all around the stadium. If a drone flies into the airspace, the system can monitor its flight path back to the drone operator. It’ll also record evidence which the police can use in their investigation.  Dedrone has worked with several agencies such as a security and intelligence agency in California. They helped protect the championship parade and have also worked with several football teams and stadiums.

Drones are prohibited from flying into stadiums and yet some operators have have been caught violating this no-fly regulation. During a San Diego Padres game, a drone crashed into the booths at Petco Park. Although no injuries were reported, nor charges filed, it is a reminder that drone flying in public spaces could result in chaos, property damage and the potential to harm people.

The owner of the drone was an individual recording videos for his blog stated Billy Hernandez an officer at the San Diego police department. He was flying it over Petco Park when he lost control of the device.  As drones get more and more popular, safety issues are on the minds of many people. Unmanned aerial vehicles can create a lot of havoc and actually cause physical harm if they are to crash into a crowded area.
