DJI and Epson Team Up to Create A New Drone Training App

DJI is out to combine drones with smart glasses. The famous drone company recently partnered with Epson to help release a new AR (Augmented Reality) app to train people on using DJI drones. The app was designed for Epson BT 300 FPV glasses, and can imitate real-world environments to create a realistic feel for flying drones.

According to DJI representatives, their new app was not only designed to help new drone pilots learn how to fly their own drones, it’s also meant to help experienced pilots enhance their skills. Epson’s Moverio AR or augmented reality smart glasses and DJI’s drone tech are thus combined to create the world’s first “glasses-based” drone flight simulation app.

This new app was reportedly made by Y Media Labs for exclusive use on Epson’s Moverio BT 300 glasses. According to Epson representatives, their app allows people to fly their own 3D drone using flight controllers for DJI’s most famous products, including the Spark, the Phantom 4 and the Mavic Pro.

DJI hopes that the new app will “revolutionize” the drone industry, by providing users with a safe way to develop their drone flying skills. The app’s flight simulation is viewed entirely through the BT 300 glasses, and offers a fly mode as well as a couple of mini-games.

Furthermore, the app will also allow user to “paint the sky” which is considered by many to be an important step in the drone market, and a lot of people already expect the app to have additional applications in the months and years to come.

According to Epson, their app will be published on the Moverio Apps market later this year, but they are now available on most drone retail shops, especially DJI affiliated companies. Also, Epson representative, Eric Mizufuka, reports the app will be the first “consumer application” for drone “augmented reality” smart glasses, making it a first of it’s kind in the industry.

In addition to the app’s existing features, Epson is also planning to add a few more extra add-ons in the future to enhance the app’s productivity and capabilities. DJI welcomes these future updates, and hopes that they will allow the app to help more hobbyists develop their piloting skills.

Although drone training apps are nothing new, the fact that Epson designed their product for smart glasses is somewhat innovative. Not only does this new app change consumer expectations with regards to drone training platforms, it also opens the way for new drone training systems to be made available to the public.
