Drones Patrolling Beaches in Long Island NY After Shark Bites

On Monday, two teenagers in Long Island, NY were bit by sharks while swimming in the ocean. There were additional bites that evening and the following day along with shark sightings in the area.  In response to the attacks, Long Island has started using drones to patrol the beaches on the lookout for sharks. If a drone happens to spot a shark, the operator can alert lifeguards of their presence so that they can let swimmers know to vacate the ocean immediately.

A total of 5 shark bites took place in the past week alone as well as over 50 sightings.  Though scientists are not 100% sure as to why the shark bites took place, they are attributing them to possible global warming as sharks are moving in closer to land. Thankfully none of the shark attacks were deadly.  Lifeguards are advising people to swim in groups, stay close to the shore and avoid wearing any shiny jewelry that the sharks may mistake for prey.
