Our forests are important natural resources. We lose many acres of forests to loggers, fires and other developments every year. Many environmentalists are keen to see a wide scale reforestation, especially in areas hit by forest fires. This is a tremendous undertaking when it comes to planting trees by hand. But this is about to change thanks to the help of drones.

It would be nearly impossible to rely on reforestation using traditional methods of planting trees by hand. A drone on the other hand  is the ideal delivery system for planting trees. Drones can analyze the land, and plant seeds in areas that need it.  Juan Carlos Sesma, creator of the company CO2 Revolution wants to use drones to survey areas suitable for reforestation. The data analytics on board the drone will determine the right kinds of seeds to plant in a given area.

This will ensure a natural, productive forest that suits the area and the animals that live there. The drones can then deliver an “Iseed” – an intelligent, nutrient-rich seed that is more viable than regular seeds. This efficient process means that the team could help to transform a bare area extremely fast. Alternatively, they could help to restore forests in areas badly damaged by forest fires. By using drones, companies can plant trees 1,000 times faster than manual approaches at a 10th of the price.

With climate change and the increased threats of wildfires, flooding and other natural disasters means that companies such as CO2 Revolution can be extremely beneficial. The recent devastation during the forest fires in California highlights the potential benefits of a drone capable of planting trees. A recent trial in Spain proved that the system works, where 1,200 hectares of destroyed forests were replanted with the help of drones.
