India Will Allow Drone Deliveries Starting in 2019

The Government of India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation plans to allow the commercial operation of drones by March 2019 under their new Drone 2.0 policy. It’s expected to result in a significant growth in business opportunities that cater to the needs of e-commerce consumers across the country.

Prior to this, the ministry had released their Drone 1.0 policy which made it legal for both businesses and individuals to operate their drones beginning December 1st, 2018. But this government policy didn’t allow the commercial use of drones as delivery vehicles or taxis. Under this new policy, drone operators can apply for permissions on the Digital Sky Platform and get instant approvals for the operation of drones for recreational purposes, including photography and videography.

In an interview Jayant Sinha, the Minister of Civil Aviation, confirmed that the ministry is “very much on track” to give the drone industry a green right on December 1st. “We think it will be truly revolutionary once we implement the Drone 2.0 regulations in the coming months,” he claimed. “It will make India one of the world leaders in the field of drone regulation,” he added. The draft of Drone 2.0 policy will be released to the public at a global aviation summit to be held on January 15th, 2019.

The Drone 1.0 regulation allows users to fly “nano” drones that are less than 250 grams in weight without seeking permission. However, the drone operators have been advised to let the local police authorities know about their operations in advance to avoid any hassles. In addition to this, the policy strictly demands that drone operators should not breach the privacy of individuals who are present within the line of sight. (Meaning to not fly over or near people)

According to a statement released by another ministry official who wanted to remain anonymous, users of drones which don’t fall under the category of nano-drones will need to apply for a one-time registration of their drones. Users will also need to seek permission each time they want to fly their drone. This automated process will be handled by a mobile app which will either permit or deny their request instantly. The rule ensures that drones stay on the flight paths approved for their use. In addition to this, the regulation ensures that the drones stay out of the “no fly zones” which include areas around airports, international borders, and other high security zones.
