Looking Back on the Biggest Drone Stories of 2024
As of December 12, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that more than 1 million drones were registered in the United States, along with 423,047 Part 107 certified pilots. With such industry growth, it’s understandable that drones played a major role in global news stories. Some of the biggest drone-related news centered around their use in military and law enforcement operations, entertainment, delivery possibilities, and, of course, the mystery drone sightings in the Northeast. For starters, the Ukrainian government demonstrated how powerful a small, underdog country could be with the right fleet of drone technology.
February 2024 marked the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Slowly but surely, with an arsenal of offensive and defensive drones, Ukraine began pushing back Russian forces. Suddenly, the world’s military forces began to take note of how rapidly Ukraine was advancing in military drone production and operations. Ukraine’s Armed Forces, numbering roughly 250,000 personnel, were outperforming Russia’s 1.15 million-strong military. On December 21, 2024, Ukraine once again shocked the world by launching a successful drone attack on a building more than 1,000 kilometers away from the frontlines of the war. If you looked up drone news at any point throughout 2024, an article about Ukraine’s drone technology was sure to appear.
Meanwhile, more law enforcement agencies throughout the United States embraced the benefits of drone technology. One of the greatest examples of this was the NYPD’s extensive use of drones. The department began heavily deploying drones in the summer of 2024 to increase lifeguard presence along the state’s many public beaches. The NYPD also used drones to relay emergency warnings for approaching storms and ran multiple drone simulation preparedness drills to protect citizens. Most recently, the NYPD launched a new drone task force to address dangerous trends like subway surfing.
Drone light shows were another recurring news theme in 2024. It seemed as though there were drone shows taking place all over the world each week. From major cities to small towns, drone light shows dominated the nighttime sky, setting multiple Guinness World Records. But one of the most exciting drone stories was the announcement of Amazon’s latest steps toward dominating drone delivery. Working closely with the FAA, Amazon launched its MK30 delivery drone in Arizona. “With the MK30,” the company said in a press release, “Amazon is making faster and safer drone delivery possible. Our vision is to develop drones that can fly thousands of times and deliver millions of packages annually.” This new program has the potential to finally bring large-scale drone deliveries to mainstream markets.
Perhaps the biggest drone stories of the year centered around the mystery drones spotted over New Jersey and the surrounding areas in late 2024. The world seemed captivated by the mystery, wondering what these drones—if they were indeed drones—could possibly mean. The government downplayed the situation, attempting to reassure the public that there was no threat, but overall, provided a less-than-reassuring response to the mystery drone phenomenon. New Jersey Representative and member of the Intelligence Committee Josh Gottheimer agreed that the situation posed no real threat, though he argued that the government needed to provide more clarity. “The public deserves to know more, and it’s up to the FBI and Homeland Security to brief the public immediately. This can’t be the Wild West of drone activity,” he said.
Overall, it was another successful year for everyone invested in the drone industry. These were just a few of the biggest, recurring drone stories of 2024. Stories of how drones helped foster education and research programs, improved dangerous jobs, made discoveries, and much more were abundant. As drones continue to evolve and find new applications across various sectors, their impact on society will only grow. Whether it’s reshaping military strategies, enhancing public safety, revolutionizing delivery systems, or sparking curiosity with mysterious sightings, drones are proving to be more than just a technological trend. As 2024 draws to a close, it’s clear that the future of drones holds vast potential, promising even greater advancements and challenges in the years ahead.
