New Drone Capable of Flying In Air and Under Water
Designed by SwellPro, a company that specializes in waterproof drones and with the help of Urban Drones, the “Spry Drone” has the ability to fly in the air and as well as under water. The Spry was officially launched on Kickstarter and was fully funded in less than 24 hours. This just goes to show how popular drones are, especially when they can do something so unique!
The Spry can float allowing the drone to both land and take off from the water. If you flip the drone over, the propellers allow it to propel itself under water. The company is not new to the drone industry having launched air to water drones before, such as the Splash 3. However, the company says the Spry is special since it is the first drone that can navigate under water using the propellers just like a submarine. Once the propellers stop spinning, the drone floats to the surface in which it can then take off.
While in the air, the Spry drone is a mix between a camera and a racing drone. The drone comes with a 4K, 30 frames-per-second/12-megapixel camera. If you disable the GPS, the Spry can reach speeds of more than 43mph! With GPS enabled, the Spry offers flight patterns such as object orbit and auto follow, along with other options like holding its position in the air or returning automatically to the pilot’s location. Using the mobile app, you can also preset a flight path for the drone to take.
The drone uses a Sony camera sensor which can be controlled from a remote control. The controller itself is also waterproof and can float on water. It comes with a 4.3-inch monitor with live recording. Since the drone has built in wifi, it is possible to stream the drone’s footage to multiple devices simultaneously. Early backers can reserve a Spry for about $770 while the retail price is expected to be about $990. The company expects the first orders to be delivered in December 2018.
