South Korea to Use Drones For Security During the Winter Olympics

South Korea will be turning to drones for extra security during the Winter Olympics that it will host. The drones that will be used are capable of firing Kevlar nets and will be used as a security precaution because of the recent tension between North Korea and South Korea. The host city, Pyeongchang is less than 100 kilometers away from the North Korean border and with the recent altercations between the two nations, security measures are being taken with utmost seriousness.

Drones and Security

Drones have become a common weapon of war, especially industrial drones which have been used by many nations for the last two decades. ISIS was linked with a plan to use drones to attack civilians by US officials and since then, organizers of large public events have been on high alert in regard to aerial attacks.

South Korea will be extra vigilant regarding the security of the 83,000 visitors expected to be in attendance. The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has even threatened to obliterate his Southern neighbor and an aerial attack would be the most obvious way.

State-of-the-Art Security Measures

The South Korean government is taking no risks and has put in place a variety of measures to keep the attendants safe during the events. They include drone detection radar with the most cutting-edge technology which has the ability to detect any drone approaching the airspace. Other measures include radio signal-jamming guns that can shoot down any drone that makes its way into restricted airspace. Finally, special agents will use helicopters to scour the airspace for any unauthorized drones. This will be supplemented by the state-of-the-art drones which have the ability to unleash a net on any suspicious unmanned aerial vehicle.

Not the First Time

This will not be the first time drone technology will be deployed as a security measure during a large public event. When Donald Trump was sworn in as the US president, the US government turned to anti-drone technology to watch over the Washington DC airspace.  If you are planning to go to the Winter Olympics this year, you can rest assured that the South Korean government is taking security extremely serious.
