Intel’s Drones Might Replace Fireworks – Wonder Woman Display

Warner Bros recently promoted their extremely successful Wonder Woman movie with drone lights in the place of fireworks on recently, in Los Angeles. Intel Company was the one behind this drone show technology, and as you may have already seen in the past, they have also featured in events such as the 2017 Super Bowl.

With a group of 300 synchronized LED-carrying drones, various shapes and words formed a number of complex patterns to display illustrations related to Wonder Woman movie using Intel’s drone technology. Just like in the previous Super Bowl event, the Wonder Woman had a live music accompanying the drone light show. Tina Guo, who is the musician behind Wonder Woman’s theme song performed her cello live.

The drones first formed the DC logo, followed by formation of words like “Wisdom,” “Grace,” and “Power” beautifully illuminated in the sky. The official Wonder Woman logo and the Wonder Woman silhouette also lit the sky marking the finale of the event.

The drone show lasted for about 8 minutes; however, it was a very successful show of drone technology event for the Intel team that was predominantly made up of women. Women indeed played a major role in the event, managed by N. Cheung, who’s the General Manager for Intel’s Drone Group.

For security reasons, the display uses small, lightweight drones designed to prevent any problems in the event that any of them fails mid-flight. Their rotors are also protected and their bodies made from foam and plastic. And in case you were concerned of being spied on by 300 drones; these specific drones do not come with any cameras. The company mentioned that their system is designed for ease of use, and you can plan and rehearse on your PC in advance so you know exactly what to expect.

The company has previously developed drone shows for Disney, a move that might save lots of money if the company decides to use drones instead of fireworks. Disney is rumored to spend well over $50m per year, which makes it arguably the largest consumer of fireworks. There are already conversations to the tune that the switch from fireworks to drones has a positive impact on the environment. As you may already know, anything that burns, fireworks included, releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

To add to the potential environmental pollution, fireworks are generally loud and noisy. This might be thought to be fun by some people, but not everyone likes it. Pets, children and people with some medical conditions might find firework displays unpleasant. Drones, on the other hand, are quieter and produces more controlled light. You will only need one computer to pilot the squad of drones and you can get algorithms for the patterns created in just a few days.

Intel is so far the only company creating these type of drone displays for entertainment purpose. There are few other companies coming up with similar technology, and we expect the aerial drone display technology to rise in the near future.
